Thoreau Scholars cover the spectrum of scientific inquiry and adventure by maintaining extraordinary academic records and gaining an amazing array of experiences during their undergraduate years. They have spread out all over the world, from Costa Rica to Africa, completing summer internships and academic programs that put them in the oceans, trees, deserts, jungles, remote villages, and cities. They have headed for the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, the Rainforest Action Network, the Gobi Desert, and environmental justice movements in New York City. Some Scholars work on the cutting edge of technology and environmental policy creating solutions for cleaner drinking water and alternative energy sources. Others set sail on tall ships learning the oldest ways of celestial navigation. What drives our Scholars on their personal quest? It's their overriding determination to make our world a better, healthier place, together with a real sense of adventure.

Each year, the Henry David Thoreau Foundation selects 10-12 students from Massachusetts with plans to pursue an interest in an environmental field at the undergraduate institution of their choice. Our recent Scholars are listed here.
